The MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) Scholarship, offered by the Japanese government, provides Ethiopian students with opportunities to pursue higher education in Japan. This comprehensive scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, monthly living allowances, and round-trip airfare, facilitating a conducive environment for academic and personal growth.

Types of Scholarships Available:

  1. Research Student Program: Designed for postgraduate students aiming to conduct research in various fields.​
  2. Undergraduate Student Program: Targets students who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Japan.​
  3. College of Technology Student Program: Intended for students seeking technical education at Japanese colleges of technology.​

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nationality: Applicants must hold Ethiopian citizenship. Non-Ethiopian citizens should apply through the Japanese Embassy or Consulates in their respective countries.​
  • Age: Specific age requirements vary by program; applicants should consult the detailed guidelines for each scholarship type.​
  • Academic Background: Candidates must have the necessary educational qualifications corresponding to the chosen program.​
  • Health: Applicants should be in good physical and mental health to pursue studies in Japan.​

Application Process:

  1. Document Submission: All required application documents must be sent via postal service to the Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia. Hand-delivered or emailed applications are not accepted.​
  2. Screening Process:
    • Document Screening: Initial evaluation based on submitted documents.​
    • Written Examination: Candidates who pass the document screening will be invited for a written exam, typically held in mid-June.
    • Interview: Successful examinees will proceed to an interview session, usually conducted consecutively with the written exam.​
    • Issuance of Passing Certificate for the Primary Screening: Candidates who pass the above stages receive a certificate to apply to Japanese universities.​
  3. Secondary Screening: Conducted in Tokyo, this stage involves a comprehensive evaluation based on the examination and application materials submitted to the Embassy.​

Important Notes:

  • Ensure all application documents are complete and adhere to the specified guidelines. Incomplete applications will not be processed.​
  • Regularly check the Embassy’s official website for updates or changes to the application schedule.​
  • Documents submitted are non-returnable; retain copies for personal records.
  • All application documents should be typed and printed on A4 paper.​
  • Photographs should be glued, not stapled, to the application forms.​
